Tuesday Bike Ride

with Tipton Community Cycling 16th June 2026

From Tipton Activity Hub we made our way,
Setting off on a bright fine day.
Up the Cracker and the Railer we rode with cheer,
With well-tuned bikes and good friends near.

Onto the Walsall Canal we found our pace,
The towpath winding through a peaceful place.
Mile by mile the waters led,
Beneath open skies stretched overhead.

At the turning for Wednesbury town we steered,
With our halfway break now drawing near.
At Wetherspoon's garden we took our rest,
A welcome pause that felt the best.

So outside we sat in the Wetherspoon sun,
Watching shoppers and locals come and go.
Not inside the pub, where the crowd might hide,
But out in the garden, with our bikes at our side.

And being a little naughty on this ride today,
A refreshing blood orange cider came our way.
With laughter and chatter the time slipped by,
As clouds drifted slowly across the sky.

Then back to the canal, refreshed once more,
Following familiar towpaths as before.
Along the Walsall Canal our wheels did roll,
With Bradley Locks our next small goal.

Up through the locks and on we wound,
To Weddell Wynd where new views were found.
Then back to the Cracker and Railer once more,
Following the route we'd travelled before.

At last to Victoria Park we came,
Tipton Activity Hub our journey's aim.
No race to win, no record to chase,
Just bikes, good company, and a well-earned pace.

Grateful...

A big shout-out to the workers at Sandwell Council who look after our bowling green!

Earlier this year, our bowling green wasn't looking very healthy at all. The team that looks after the ground has worked hard feeding the grass, mowing it regularly, and giving it the care and attention it needed. Thanks to their efforts, it's now looking much better and is well on its way to being in great condition for the bowlers to enjoy.

Your hard work is appreciated — a big thumbs-up and a heartfelt thank-you!

A Surprise Stop on the Shropshire Canal

Today brought an extra adventure for some of the cyclists from Tipton Activity Hub – Tipton Community Cycling.

Meeting at our usual place, we set off for a leisurely ride along the canal network, enjoying the fresh air, good company, and peaceful waterside scenery. As the ride continued, we made our way towards the Shropshire Canal, taking in the sights and sounds of nature along the route.

One of the most memorable moments of the day came when our journey was unexpectedly interrupted in the most delightful way. While cycling along the towpath, we found ourselves brought to a complete stop by a family of swans and their adorable baby cygnets making their way across our path.

There was no rushing them along. Instead, everyone paused to watch these tiny bundles of fluff exploring the canal edge, completely unaware that they had halted a group of cyclists. Cameras came out, smiles appeared, and for a few minutes the ride became less about cycling and more about appreciating one of those simple moments that nature gifts us.

It's experiences like these that make our community rides so special. The canals always have something new to offer, whether it's beautiful scenery, wildlife encounters, or simply the chance to spend time with friends.

A lovely extra trip, great company, and a heartwarming encounter with some very small towpath traffic.
